This is a walking tour of Split with a local historian! It will be my pleasure to take you through all of the relevant sites in the center of Split. In a logical manner we will be following the city’s development through time.
I have a Master’s degree in History science. My knowledge helps me to provide much more than what is learned at a regular tour guide course. Years of study and passion for history is behind me and I am really trying to carry that forward. Also, I am a local, born and still living in Split!
Combination of expertise and education I gained as a teacher makes my tours a logical and pragmatic experience.
As a fluent English speaker I am enforcing dialogue as much as I can during the tour, and it provides much more personal contact with the guide and it is easier and more enjoyable to learn that way.
Through the tour, I will show 3D reconstructions of the sites. It is my great passion and a result of my own work and dedication, in order to bring the past to life and for the visitor to truly be able to envision the rich history of Split.

The meeting spot is at the Bronze Gate of Diocletian's Palace. That is the southern seaside entrance from the Promenade (Riva) to the Palace. You can also search the address 'Obala hrvatskog narodnog preporoda 22'. The easiest way to reach it is to find the Promenade (Riva) first and then go towards the Bronze Gate, as they are near the seafront.
The tour is done within and around Diocletian's Palace, which is actually the core and oldest part of the city of Split. It is a 1700-year-old palace of the retired Roman emperor Diocletian which, through interesting events, became the city of Split we have today. For 17 centuries people had been living on that same spot, building layers upon layers of still visible and persisting history integrated into the daily lives of its today's residents.
After the introduction outside the southern wall of the Palace, the tour starts by entering through the Bronze Gate into the Basement Halls. It is a huge, incredibly well-preserved complex of chambers underneath Diocletian's private quarters. We are passing only through one chamber, as the rest of the Basement is a museum.
After moving through the Basement Halls, we arrive at the main square of Diocletian's Palace - the beautifully preserved ancient Roman square. After explaining all of the interesting facts about it, the tour continues around the square to show all the interesting and iconic Roman structures.
We enter the Vestibule, a phenomenally preserved entrance of the private quarters of Emperor Diocletian.
After the Vestibule, the tour will stop at the nearby Temple of Jupiter to explain all the interesting facts about it. We will not enter inside the Temple as it is a Musem.
After we visit all the sites surrounding the square, we proceed towards the eastern Silver Gate of the Palace where we see the 1700-year-old Roman street and the Mausoleum that leans onto it.
The best view of emperor Diocletian's Mausoleum is from Decumanus Street. Today that is the Cathedral of St. Dominus with the beautiful belltower added to it as a landmark of Split. We stop by as the guide explains its importance, but we are not entering inside as it s a paid site.
We move north towards the main gate of the Palace, but on the way, we are passing through the old residential area of the Palace where we can see the medieval housing and the phenomenally preserved Papalić Palace - the best example of Venetian architecture in Split. There the guide explains the connection between Venice and Split.
After Papalić Palace, we go arrive outside of the Palace where we see the Golden Gate, the main entrance, and the entire northern wall. Here the guide also gives context to the historical expansion of the city of Split outside of the Palace shell.
The tour ends on Piazza Square (the People's Square) which is today's main square of the city of Split. From here, everything is at arms reach, because all streets eventually connect to here. The guide, alongside the conclusion, will give you further information on what to further explore in Split and around it.
